Unique Program In Kerala To Develop Reading Habit In Students

Read-and-grow programme initiated for Kerala schools.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Thursday will launch a unique programme at all government and government-aided schools - full-fledged libraries to help students acquire a reading habit.

"This programme would cover 2,393 high and 2,827 upper primary schools and would be launched tomorrow," state Education Minister E.T. Mohammed Basheer told reporters here Wednesday.

Under the programme, several agencies like banks, village councils, parents and teachers would act as coordinating agencies.

At present, all government schools do not have the required library facilities.

"We have asked every student to donate one book to the library," he said. "

The State Level Bankers' Committee has already agreed to sponsor this project by providing the necessary support.

"We would be providing the design for the libraries and all schools would have the same type of library. We would also organise various competitions to make reading a habit," Basheer said.
